"It was one of life's most wonderful coincidences when I heard about Pavitra through a relative of mine. I thought furnishing an entire new house would be chaotic and a headache to execute, but working with Pavitra made it not only easy as a breeze but exciting as well. Not many designers would take a client's personal taste into consideration when planning a space, luckily I ended up with someone who does. I've met many interior designers but Pavitra's name always comes first to mind when friends or family ask me for a recommendation."

Surfaces by Moz!

As designers so much of our time is spent thinking of ingenious ways to treat surfaces. Surfaces such as walls, ceiling, flooring and even surfaces of our furniture. After all these years of practicing interior design I do have the confidence to question the fundamentals such as why are windows always rectangular and not round or oval? Why are walls always straight and not at an angle? Why are surfaces always straight and not undulated? I hope I can experiment with surfaces someday but first I will need to find a client who is willing to be adventurous!!!

I am always excited to learn about a new material to dress up a surface and if they are environmentally conscious even better! I discovered this company called Moz during my trip to New York.

Moz was founded in 1989 by two brothers who designed and built modern metal furniture in a San Francisco bay area garage and has now evolved in many ways over the past two and a half decades. Today we are talking about their designer Metal laminates and products such as Column Covers, Wall panels and others. The raw materials used for manufacturing of Moz products are domestically sourced metals. They have an extremely long lasting installed lifespan and can be recycled once their useful life in the applied environment has come to an end. Moz Aluminium products contributes to Leed Credits for recycled content.

In 2012 Moz installed an impressive on-site Solar System to power their offices and manufacturing facilities and now boasts sufficient electrical power generation to supply their own power as well as contributing power back to the utilities grid. All Moz products are proudly made in the U.S.A. from start to finish.

Below are some of my favorite applications:

I encourage you to visit their website and learn more about all their different products. The sheets come in many different textures , colors and can be customized as well!

Colours of Arabia

I was recently invited to attend a very special event hosted by Berger paints at Noire, Fairmont Dubai. We were to view some webisodes that told the story of a young blind girl and her Grandfather who embark on a journey together around the U.A.E. to experience color in a special way. Her grandfather explains color through experiences the girl has had growing up. The webisodes are beautifully shot against the landscape of the U.A.E and captures the message effortlessly.

We as bloggers got to witness first hand how it felt to have our sense of sight taken away for a few hours as we were invited to dine in the dark at Noire. We were escorted in pitch darkness to our tables and yes some of us stumbled! We laughed nervously as there was an anxious energy that surrounded us. We have all become so accustomed to being bombarded by information and visuals every second of the day that it is very abnormal for us to stay still. “Staying connected” has a very different meaning to us these days, while we seem to stay connected with the rest of the world we are slowly disconnecting ourselves from reality. And with our phones being taken away through the dinner made this more evident. As the waiters served us one course after the other I noticed my other senses worked that much harder to compensate for sense of sight.

It was a humbling experience to say the least. Being in a profession that is so visual I definitely felt incapacitated as i sat in pitch darkness through my dinner. It made me question if indeed we could experience life and all it’s glory in more ways than just one. This way of thinking is imperative when designing public spaces, it is so ignorant to design spaces for regular people without thinking of the special needs others may have.

This opened my eyes to a world of possibilities of how we can experience color, space, light and many more if we could just open up our minds. I must commend Berger paints for this unique initiative to educate people of these possibilities and raise the question of how we can mould our thinking to make this world a better place for everyone who inhabits it.

Berger paints was established in the 1760 and today is a global force with a strong presence in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean Islands, the South Pacific, and the Middle East. They have a very informative and well laid out website with lots of tips and inspiration to choose your perfect color from their 1800 original hues. It also is equipped with tools such as the paint calculator! You can download their Color scheme Pro app from google play or the App store to create custom combinations easily. You can even select a color by uploading a photograph and picking the closest shades from it. If you have found the color you like? Get hundreds of monochromatic, complementary, and analogous color combinations and view them in a 3D room setting. This is such an exciting tool for me and i cannot wait to use it, I hope you will too.

THE HOTEL SHOW, DUBAI 2016

I was honored to be the online media partner that covers “THE HOTEL SHOW ” on my blog this year. It is always a pleasure visiting the Dubai World Trade Center for a trade show. The entry process was completely digital with very little need for human intervention. This shows how Dubai is aggressively progressing towards becoming the regions first complete digital city. Needless to say the show was managed seamlessly by DMG Events.

Interior Design is an integral part of the hotel show and that was evident by the large number of booths that spanned over several halls that displayed furniture, finishes and lighting products. I would highly recommend visiting the Hotel show if you are part of the Interior Design Industry even if you are not directly working within the Hotel Sector. There is a lot to learn and I am happy to share with you my findings.

I was very happy to meet the representatives of STYLIS hotel solutions after being drawn to their wonderfully subdued yet rich display. STYLIS offers complete turnkey solutions from design to production of european furniture and finishes to their clients. I was surprised to learn they also have a line of office furniture solutions. Another reason why all Interior Design professionals must visit THE HOTEL SHOW you never know what you will find.

The display by TAM stood out with it’s clean lines and simplicity of design. Tamilla Jazayeri the very talented designer who founded TAM spoke very passionately about her love for design. I was very proud of the exceptional quality of her designs that were manufactured here in the UAE.

Granorte displayed their very unique sustainable furniture, finishes and bath products. I learnt how waste from wine cork stoppers was used as raw material to manufacture their award wininng products. Their cork floating floors “Vita Decor” are a few examples how we can beautify our spaces whilst being conscious of our effects on the environment.

My Mosaic showcased their very innovative mosaic tiles that were manufactured with a new patented nanotechnology based polymer. They can convert any digital image to customizable mosaics. The advantage are that these are extremely light weight as compared to tile/stone mosaic, they are flexible enough to be wrapped with ease around curved surfaces and most of all the mosaic shapes and sizes can be customized as well.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this article. Please follow me on instagram for instant updates. I will be back with more interesting producst and news from the design world in the coming weeks.

Giving the gift of Imagination!

Giving the gift of imagination is one of the most wondrous gifts you could give your child. No one knows better than me what it means to have a colorful imagination! Being a recluse had an advantage, i grew up with a vivid imagination that has many a times been my escape and also a boon for my Interior design profession. During my time in design school I recall our professors encouraged us to be as imaginative as possible, even if it meant it was borderline ridiculous. It was safe to do so for fantasy school projects with no budget restraints or consequences. Now i understand the importance of exercising our imagination because imagination is the root of creation.
In the words of Albert Einstein
“ Logic will get you from A to B but Imagination will take you everywhere”
My next product Circu sparked my interest because it is magical & fanciful, just what the designer recommended! It is a statement piece, it is out-there and at the same time it is functional! It brings a bit of old world charm into the world of millennials.

I am sure these products will bring a smile to your face and waken your inner child!

Metal Sheer

It’s been 8 months since my last post, I can’t believe it! Since i started this blog, life has taken me on an unexpected journey of self-discovery. It’s been difficult but i have made peace with the uncertainty of life. I can safely say the fact that i love what i do, my work, my passion for design has kept me sane. I have drowned myself in work just so that i can escape from the chaos of the outside world. Juggling work and responsibilities at home leaves me with little time for myself, whether it’s simply to take a walk or write a little something. I hope to write every few weeks hereon because i love to share things that excite me in the design world and i have been collecting interesting materials to share since very long. So here goes…
All things that shine, glitter and gleam excite me, so when i came across Sophie Mallebranche’s incredible collection of metal sheer's and panels i was thrilled!! She creates textile with metal!! Her stainless steel, brass, bronze and tin weaves combine with Silicone, silk or linen that can be used as wall coverings, window coverings, laminated on glass, wrapped around furniture to name a few. The effect is spectacular especially the applications that i have seen in the hospitality sector. I cannot wait to specify it on a project and i hope you do too. By exposing our clients to such materials we are supporting these amazingly talented designers and artists.
These are some of my favorite applications of the product, what are yours?
